Maybe the most sinister of all the pain and problems that comes with Fibromyalgia is the fact that for many sufferers, the pain associated with the disease disrupts sleep. When an illness targets muscles and joints and comes with extreme pain, sleep takes on an even bigger importance than normal. Sleep is the time when your body heals itself, especially the muscles where, during the progress of a normal day, we can suffer many small injuries. During a normal 8 hours of sleep, those injuries heal and we don’t even realize we got them. For Fibromyalgia sufferers, those tiny, insignificant pulls and tears can add to the chronic, nagging pain of the disease, making things much worse.

Not only does Fibromyalgia disturb and even destroy normal sleep patterns, it is also closely associated with many common sleep disorders.

Alpha-EEG – Alpha-EEG anomaly is a bizarre and mysterious ailment where a sleeping persons’ brain shows bursts of activity that is similar to the activity when someone is awake. These bursts are measured by an EEG machine, hence the name. This ailment is so common among those that suffer from Fibromyalgia; it is thought that alpha-EEG might even cause Fibromyalgia. It can be a devastating ailment since it completely destroys a sleeping person’s ability to reach deep, restful sleep. This deep sleep stage is the time when most of the body heals itself. A person suffering from Alpha-EEG usually wakes from a night’s sleep feeling sluggish and depressed.

RLS – RLS or Restless Leg Syndrome is also a little understood sleep disorder that is caused when excess acid builds up in the joints in the legs and causes a dull, gnawing-like pain that is temporarily relieved when the leg is moved around. About 15% of fibromyalgia patients suffer with RLS too. When the leg is put back at rest, the pain can come back within seconds. For RLS sufferers, the pain is usually at its worst when lying down. The symptoms associated with RLS also seem to be worst during the evening, so sleeping through the night can be all but impossible for those with RLS.

Sleep Apnea – Maybe the scariest of all sleep disorders, sleep apnea is a condition where the sufferer actually stops breathing during sleep. Around 80% of people with fibromyalgia suffer with sleep apnea. For most people with sleep apnea, they can go years with the condition and not even know they have it unless someone else notices and tells them. For most people with sleep apnea, the condition is caused by being obese or by severe snoring problems. But for Fibromyalgia patients, it is caused by a rare and bizarre situation where the brain simply doesn’t tell the lungs to breathe. While the condition isn’t fatal, it does require the sufferer to wake up repeatedly during the night to the point where sleep becomes impossible. Again, a sleep apnea sufferer wakes feeling very tired and completely unrated.

The vicious circle of sleep disorders may be the single worst part of having Fibromyalgia. But with proper diet, exercise and advice from a physician, Fibromyalgia patients can sleep through the night peacefully.
