For those suffering with fibromyalgia, the majority of doctors will prescribe medications to help a patient manage the pain associated with the condition. Some of the usual fibromyalgia medications are Hydrocodone, Soma (carisoprodol), COX-2 inhibitors, Fentanyl (Duragesic), Ultracet and Ultram. A more detailed discussion of the most popular fibromyalgia medications follows.

Hydrocodone is a narcotic that is similar in nature to codeine. It was originally used as a cough medication in the beginning. Studies have established that 5 mg. of hydrocodone is equal to 30 g. of codeine. Noteworthy too is the fact that medicines of this kind have opioid properties and therefore have the possibility of becoming addictive. Hence, authorities have controlled their use and they are normally restricted as prescription-only drugs. Although, commonly taken for intense pain, this can only be done regularly under the guidance of your physician. Make sure that you communicate with your doctor any other medications you are taking, including anti-allergy drugs.

There are some side effects of taking these sorts of drugs including drowsiness and difficulty maintaining attention, plus they can be addictive. So, you may want to weight up the pros of pain relief against the cons of additional tiredness and concentration difficulties.

COX-2 inhibitors are another option to the common non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs and work equally well as the NSAIDs, but without the potential adverse effects like ulceration and bleeding in the gastrointestinal organs. Of this kind of medication, Celebrex is the most popularly prescribed. Some individuals even claim that this medicine will be the pain reliever for years to come. Nevertheless, it can produce side effects in some patients with an increased risk in heart attacks. Indeed, Vioxx, which is a pain medication belonging to this group, has just been withdrawn from the market due to its side effects. This in turn created doubts for the other COX2 inhibitors.

Fentanyl, sold under the trade name Duragesic is given to patients via patch just like the nicotine patch used to help people stop smoking. It is a narcotic that this designed to tackle moderate to severe pain. You wear it for three days, after which you replace it with a new patch. In its first administration, you may need up to 72 hours to feel its effectiveness. Some patients however complain that they have not felt its effectiveness for the whole 72 hours. Hence, another administration may be necessary. This again can become additive and has a number of possible side effects such as drowsiness, dizziness, insomina, muscle stiffness and back pain.

Carisoprodol, sold under the trade name Soma, is from the muscle relaxant group of medications that works by relaxing the muscles and inhibiting pain sensors from reaching the brain. Since it relaxes the muscles, then it likewise enhances good sleep. However, the risk of developing dependence on this drug is quite high and stopping treatment abruptly may cause withdrawal symptoms.

Tramadol hydrochloric tablets, sold under the trade name Ulram, is a pain medication that works on the brain for the purpose of reducing the intensity of pain, and the amount of pain signals from nerve to nerve. This drug is an artificially produced analgesic rather than a NSAID.

Unwilling to use these drugs? Do not despair because there are natural options available to help you deal with the pain of fibromyalgia. Some of these are discussed below.

Coping skills education. Educating a patient to develop skills to cope with and manage the fibromyalgia stress cannot be overemphasized. For instance, persistent stress results to intensification of stress hormones that upset the HPA axis, which also regulates various processes including digestion, the immune system, mood and energy. Aside from developing skills for management of stress, an important part of your coping strategy could be to join a support group. Studies have shown that female patients belonging to a support group appear to deal with fibromyalgia better than those who are not members do.

Exercise. Patients who exercise regularly suffer fewer pains. Exercising regularly also develops your ability to control the effects of the disorder. However, you should exercise only on a gradual basis until your body has adjusted to it.

Always consult your doctor before doing anything for your fibromyalgia pain. Your doctor knows what is the best fibromyalgia medication for you and your unique health situation.
